GEOGRAPHY OF CHIANG MAI

Chiang Mai Province is about 685 km (426 mi) from Bangkok in the Mae Ping River basin and is on average at 300 m (1,000 ft) elevation. Surrounded by the mountain ranges of the Thai highlands, it covers an area of approximately 20,107 km2 (8,000 sq mi).

 

The mountains of the Daen Lao Range at the north end of the province, the Thanon Thong Chai Range  with the highest mountain in Thailand, Doi Inthanon at 2,565 metres (8,415 ft), stretching in a north-south direction, and the Khun Tan Range in the east of the province are covered by rain forest. The Mae Ping, one of the major tributaries of the Chao Phraya River, originates in the Daen Lao mountains.

 

Several national parks are in the province: Doi Inthanon, Doi Suthep-Pui, Ob Luang, Sri Lanna, Huai Nam Dang, Mae Wang, and Pha Daeng.

Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail

Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail is a must-do hiking and trekking trail not to be missed by nature lovers. It is located inside the area of Doi Inthanon National Park, home to Thailand’s highest peak.

 

Visitors to the National Park should include visiting this trail on their itinerary because the reward of hiking this short distance (2.78km) natural walk could be the most beautiful panoramic view you will ever see in Thailand. This green highly-rated trail takes about 2-3 hours to finished and suitable for beginner level hikers.

 

However, it is not recommended for people who cannot climb stairs because some trail parts require uphill hiking.

Doi Pha Hom Pok
National Park

Doi Pha Hom Pok National Park was changed from Fha Hom Pok National Park because of the name of a high hill at Dan Lao Moutain Range.

 

It is the second highest peak in Thailand, with about 2,285-metred height. The best part is you can go up to see the sunrise in the morning and sunset in the evening. The weather is quite cold, however.

 

You may want to dress in thick clothes. Moreover, there is the fog all year round and the wind too.

Doi Luang Chiang Dao National Park

Doi Luang Chiang Dao is the third highest mountain in Thailand, located in Chiang Dao County, Chiang Mai Province. Its is about 2,275 metres higher than the sea level. Mainly, the mountain consists of limestone. However, long time ago, Doi Luang Chiang Dao was possibly a sea area. After all aqua animals had died, their ash gathered each other and turn into a mountain, as you see nowadays. Now, Doi Luang Chiang Dao is a beautiful place with greenery around.

Doi Luang Chiang Dao itself isn’t a single mountain, but it consists of many other mountains too, for examples, Doi Pyramid, Doi Sam Phee Nong, Doi Nok, all of which are higher than 2,000 metres.
